Nov. 28th, 2001 07:37 pmmy seminar about body modifications had its last meeting tonight and people were presenting the topics they're writing papers on. things i learned:
* medieval nuns did some fucked up shit. i got to hear a far too vivid description of how one nun who became a saint sucked the pus out of a woman's rotting breast to demonstrate her humility. self-imposed stigmata, too.
* native american sun dances also make me queasy when vividly described. the girl presenting thankfully declined to describe the elements of the ritual in very much detail out of respect for the sacred tradition.
* cindy sherman (artist from 60's-now who takes photos of herself in various costumes and personas) rules.
* artists who nail themselves to VW bugs and hang themselves from the ceiling on about 20 meathooks threaded through the skin do not rule nearly as much as cindy sherman. these pieces, much like native american sun dances, also make me queasy.
* gross things make me queasy when discussed in much detail or when i have to see slides of them.
it was somewhat surreal to discuss all of this in the context of the living room of our professor's house in beverly hills- palm fronds brushing against the window, spanish tile fireplace, the wall over the flowery couch filled with slide projections of bullet wounds.

Nov. 28th, 2001 11:37 pmlong busy day. i got a lot done on my paper- revised the draft. then i sent it to my mom, who sent back three typed pages of comments, at which i promptly freaked out. i need to finish this and turn it in and start studying for my administrative law exam. i need to think about the dangers of governmental branches self-aggrandizing and what the role of the judiciary should be in policing such aggrandizement. (i love the word aggrandizement.) instead, i am spending the 9 millionth day in a row thinking about involuntary sterilization all day every day forever! i can no longer tell which of my arguments make sense.
thankfully, all that thinking about governmentally mandated or encouraged sterilization made it easy to write my paper for sexual orientation law about how the government interest in promoting procreation is bullshit (that's the reason courts give for finding that denying homosexuals the right to marry is not a violation of the equal protection clause). which left me plenty of time to drive around doing errands for my friend stuck taking care of her boyfriend (the one in the motorcycle accident) who has two broken arms. (which shouldn't be funny but sometimes seems it.)
gotta go to bed so i can get up early to pick her up and drive her to work and go to class and revise my paper and revise my other paper and start outlining for admin and maybe finally get some sleep.
