i watched the premiere of a simple life on tuesday with much trepidation. could a show i'd been looking forward to so intently for so long really live up to my expectations? i turned out to be pleasantly surprised by how good it was and promtly set up a season pass on my tivo so i'd be sure not to miss an episode. i think it provides so many interesting things to think about - not just the rich fish out of water fun, but also thinking about how i would cope if thrust into a rural farming environment (my conclusion - not very well). fascinating stuff.

some of my friends are definitely not on the paris hilton bandwagon. they would actually be fairly described as being on the anti-paris hilton bandwagon instead. she says a lot of really stupid things in the first episode ("what is a well for?") and has claimed in some interviews that she was intentionally overdramatizing her stupidity/fish-out-of-water-ness to be entertaining. some of my friends don't believe she's even capable of being that smart.

whatever. i love paris. in the springtime, in the fall, with her ass hanging out, saying stupid things, buying ridiculous amounts of clothings, carrying that retarded tiny dog, whatever. she rules. she rules because she's famous for being famous and i love those people more than anyone else. (i count in this group people who are ostensibly famous for their musical/acting/whatever talent but whose "talent" is far overshadowed by their sheer celebrity.)

paris & nicole richie are at the height of this famous-for-being-famous thing, but there are a whole lot of other people who fit in that group.

the spice girls, for example, ostensibly were a music group, but they were really just really really fucking famous personalities. some of the girls have concentrated more on the music than the fame after the breakup, but victoria beckham nee adams has sure managed to keep climbing the fame ladder, especially in europe. i hear they're trying to break into the US fame market. i hope they do. geri's done ok, too, with her random album and stint with the UN and celebrity judging that all american girl show and being in the tabloids for being skinny and tan and friends with george michael.

kate moss started out as a model, but she's turned into an icon and now can do things like pole-dance in her underwear (what brand underwear, i wonder?) in a white stripes video instead of modelling actual products. she's famous for her rehab and her baby and all that. she rules.

i'm sure there are tons and tons more and i love them all too. this famous-for-being-famous status seems to me like a product of 21st century american media and it is such a bizarre and stunning side effect of today's time that it seems like we have to prize it.
