Jan. 29th, 2004 07:47 pmi won a hearing this morning. my client is a 50 year old woman who had only worked for about 3 years as a cashier or sales person in department stores and grocery stores. she stopped working after debilitating arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome and rotator cuff problems made it impossible to work. she then developed a crushing depression with rage issues and occasional psychotic breaks. she had no income, so she applied for federal disability benefits and was initially denied. the hearing today appealed that denial successfully.
she was so relieved to not have to worry about paying rent. so relieved to know that she wouldn't miss a month of medications because she couldn't afford them. so relieved her daughter could afford to go back to school now that she wasn't completely supporting her mother.
it won't fix her life, not even close. it certainly won't make her mental health problems disappear. it's a pitiful amount of money, but it comes with health insurance and gives her a little breathing room and i feel really good about it.
(plus, this continues my streak of winning all the cases i take to hearing, which is cool for me. fear my skillllllz!)
